Stewart H. Greenfield Chairman

Stewart H. Greenfield is Chairman and co-founder of Alternative Investment Group.

Stewart co-founded Oak Investment Partners in 1978 and was Chairman and General Partner of the Oak venture funds until 1995. He previously held positions on the corporate staff at IBM and was Vice President and General Partner of the Sprout Venture Funds at DLJ from 1971 to 1974. From 1974 to 1978 he was co-founder of Charter Oak, a firm that assisted Xerox and 3M with technology strategy.


Stewart holds a B.A. from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD, and served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Visitors and a member of the Executive Committee of St. John’s (Annapolis and Santa Fe). He was a trustee of Commonfund Capital Group. He served on the boards of over 20 young technology companies. He is a trustee emeritus of The Nature Conservancy (CT) and since the late 80’s led tropical rainforest preservation projects in Latin America. He served on the boards of the Santa Fe Institute and the Opera Orchestra of New York. Stewart was on the advisory board of ConnCan, which has led tremendous improvements in educating minority students in Connecticut, and on the Environmental Policy Committee of the NRDC. Stewart is currently a member of the Investment Committee of Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Marita K. Wein Chief Executive Officer

Marita K. Wein is the Chief Executive Officer. She is responsible for the leadership of the firm as well as risk management at all levels of the investment process, focusing primarily on operational/infrastructure risk at the investment manager level, portfolio level, and within the Alternative Investment Group organization. Marita is a member of the firm’s Management Committee, ESG and Sustainable Investing Committee and Valuation Committee.   She joined the firm in February 2003.


Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Marita was the Senior Vice President of Operations, Technology and Risk Management at Commonfund, a multi-billion investment management organization serving endowments, foundations, and other non-profit institutions. She was with Commonfund from 1987 to 2002.


Before joining Commonfund in 1987, Marita was a Senior Financial Analyst with Van Eck Associates from 1985 to 1987, providing financial analysis and portfolio recommendations for a global equity fund for U.S. and international institutional investors. She began her career as an Operations Manager with Shearson Lehman Brothers, managing administrative and operations functions of a retail branch office in New York City from 1983 to 1985.


Marita graduated from Connecticut College with a B.A. in economics, with Honors, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Christopher Ayton Partner, Portfolio Manager

Chris Ayton is a Partner and Portfolio Manager of Alternative Investments International, L.P. and Berens Global Value Fund.  He joined Alternative Investment Group in March 2008 and is based in London.  He has more than 20 years of manager research experience and focuses on identifying and evaluating long-only and long/short strategies and managers, especially in Emerging and Frontier Markets, Asia and Europe.


Previously, Chris was a senior member of the investment team at leading investment consulting firm Stamford Associates Limited where he spent 12 years, over half of which was as the firm’s Head of Manager Research.  While this position provided exposure to many investment strategies and geographies, Chris specialized throughout his tenure in managers investing in Asian markets, including Japan.  Chris was also instrumental in establishing Stamford Associates’ manager research disciplines that were adopted across the firm.  Prior to joining Stamford Associates in 1995, Chris worked at Bacon & Woodrow.


Chris graduated in 1994 with a BSc. in Economics from University of Southampton.

Rodney Berens Partner and Co-CIO, Berens Global Value

Rodney Berens is a Partner and Co-CIO of Berens Global Value.  He joined the firm in June 2018.


Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Rod was the Founder and Co-CIO of Berens Capital Management, LLC from 2000 to 2018.  From 1992 to 1998, he was Head of Global Equities and served on the Operating Committee at Salomon Brothers. Before Salomon Brothers, he was Managing Director, Head of Equity Trading and Head of Global Research at Morgan Stanley from 1975 to 1991.  


Rod is a Life Trustee and Chair of the Investment Sub-Committee at The Morgan Library & Museum and a member of the Investment Committee of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Rod is on the Board and Audit Committee at General American Investors, and the Chair of the Audit Committee of Upwell.  


Previously Rod served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army.  In addition, he served on the Investment Committees of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, The Peterson Institute for International Economics and Svarog. He also served as a board member for Polyus Gold Mining Company, Keystone Property, Storyfirst Communications, the American Stock Exchange, and the National Organization of Investment Professionals.  Mr. Berens also served as the President of The Society for Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, President of the Board of Trustees of Green Vale School, and Head of the Upstairs Traders Advisory Committee for the New York Stock Exchange. 


Rod received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from The Wharton School. 

Richard Cheung Partner, Portfolio Manager

Richard Cheung is a Partner and Portfolio Manager of Alternative Investments, L.P. and Alternative Investments Institutional Master Fund Ltd.  He joined the firm in August 2005 from Pine Grove Associates, a multi-billion fund of hedge funds. At Pine Grove Associates, Richard was an investment analyst focused on low volatility strategies and managers. Rich’s other work experience includes positions as an investment banking analyst with UBS, a business consultant with Arthur Andersen, and a merger and acquisition associate with Business Development Asia.

Rich holds a B.S. from the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University and an M.B.A. from The Stern School, New York University.

Ellen Kanner Partner, Chief Compliance Officer

Ellen Kanner is a Partner and Chief Compliance Officer, responsible for overseeing the funds’ various legal and regulatory requirements.  Ellen is a member of the firm’s ESG and Sustainable Investing Committee and Valuation Committee.  Ellen joined Alternative Investment Group in January 1997.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Ellen worked at Citicorp, N.A., in the Distribution Finance department, from 1991 to 1995. Before Citicorp, Ellen worked from 1989 to 1990 at Presentations, Inc., a marketing consulting firm, providing marketing guidance as well as new business development proposals. Prior to Presentations, Inc., Ellen was an independent management consultant, developing internal procedures, contingency plans, and accounting structures for small businesses from 1985 to1989. From 1981 to 1984, she worked as a Special Sales Manager for Holt, Rinehart and Winston publishers where she cultivated untapped book markets through non-traditional sales venues.

Ellen holds an A.B. from Vassar College and an M.B.A. from The Stern School, New York University.

Timothy Schilt Partner and Co-CIO, Berens Global Value

Timothy Schilt is a Partner and Co-CIO of Berens Global Value.  He joined the firm in June of 2018.


Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Tim was Co-CIO at Berens Capital Management, LLC from 2003 to 2018.  Prior to joining Berens Capital, Tim was a Managing Director at K2 Advisors, a fund of hedge funds firm. From 1988 to 2000, Tim was a Managing Director at Tiger Management where he spearheaded the movement into Japanese long and short investments and was also involved in U.S. equity analysis. In 1996, he moved to Japan to manage and expand Tiger’s Tokyo research team. Prior to joining Tiger Management, Mr. Schilt was Director of Research and Investment Strategist at Morgan Stanley where he helped build and manage the Tokyo-based research team. From 1983 to 1985, Tim was at Asia Management Corporation as President and Portfolio Manager of the Japan Fund, the first U.S.-based mutual fund invested solely in Japanese equities. He began his career at Merrill Lynch in 1968 and eventually became Vice President and Portfolio Manager of the Merrill Lynch Capital Fund and the Merrill Lynch Pacific Fund.


Tim received a B.A. from Hofstra University. He is a member of the Board of The Tiger Foundation and is a Non-Executive Director of Rodinia Partners.


Samuel Sussman Partner, Head of Investment Strategy / Portfolio Manager

Sam Sussman is a Partner, Head of Investment Strategy and Portfolio Manager of Alternative Investments Opportunity, L.P. and Alternative Investments Sustainability, L.P.  He is responsible for directing the firm’s top-down research, identifying investment opportunities across strategies, industry sectors, and geographies and has primary responsibility for sourcing and monitoring the firm’s event-driven and credit managers. Sam is a member of the firm’s ESG and Sustainable Investing Committee.  He joined the firm in January 2012.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Sam was a Partner at Cadogan Management, where he was the head of research and responsible for sourcing and monitoring credit and event-driven equity managers. Before Cadogan, Sam was a Senior Managing Director at Bear Stearns where he spent nearly 13 years in the firm’s securitized products area. Prior to this, he was an associate/consultant at Corporate Decisions, Inc., a strategy consulting firm.

Sam holds a B.A., magna cum laude, in Economics from Yale University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Sam is also a Board Member and Treasurer for Gracie Gardens Cooperative Association and a Board Member of Agora Partnerships, a non-profit focused on global economic development.

Michael J. Tansley Partner, Chief Operating Officer

Michael Tansley is a Partner and Chief Operating Officer and oversees the firm’s accounting, audit, tax, technology and financial controls, information management and administrative operations. Michael is a member of the firm’s Management Committee and Valuation Committee. He joined the firm in June 2011.


Prior to Alternative Investment Group, Michael was with JP Morgan Funds Management, where he was Controller for the firm's mutual funds. Before that, he held leadership roles at GE Money, a division of GE Capital, and GE Asset Management, and was Senior Manager at Price Waterhouse.


Michael is a Chartered Accountant and received a BSc with honors in Aeronautical Engineering from Manchester University in Manchester, England.

Eugene Chin, CPA Director, Operations

Gene Chin is Director of Operations responsible for fund accounting and operations.  Gene interacts closely with the firm’s external service providers and assists with various compliance matters. He joined the firm in June 2007.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Gene was a Senior Fund Accountant at FrontPoint Partners, a multi-strategy, alternative investment firm. Before FrontPoint, Gene was a Portfolio Analyst at SAC Capital Advisors, a multi-strategy, private asset management firm. At both firms, he performed monthly closings, product pricing, performance analysis and reporting. Gene’s other work experience includes positions as an Accounting Manager at GE Real Estate and as a Staff Auditor at Deloitte & Touche.

Gene holds a B.S. in Accounting from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University and an M.B.A. in Finance from the School of Business at the University of Connecticut. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Connecticut and served on the Board of Directors of a local non-profit organization.


Tung Duong, CFA Investment Analyst

Tung Duong is an Investment Analyst at Alternative Investment Group responsible for portfolio construction analysis, manager research and monitoring of existing investments. He joined the firm in June 2018.


Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Tung was a Research Analyst at Berens Capital Management, LLC from 2017 to 2018.  Prior to joining Berens, Tung was an associate accountant at Liberty Mutual Investments, and hedge fund market research intern at Brighton House Associates. 


Tung graduated from Bentley University with a B.S. in Economics and Finance and an M.S. in Finance with high distinction. Tung is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Joel Bailey Partner Relations Associate

Joel Bailey is a Partner Relations Associate at Alternative Investment Group, responsible for supporting our client service and business development efforts.  Joel joined the firm in November 2015.


Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Joel was a Senior Associate at SS&C, providing investor relations support for the Administrator’s hedge fund and fund of hedge fund relationships. 


Joel holds a B.S. in Business Administration, major in Accounting and minor in Legal Studies and Computer Information Systems from Bryant University.

Diane Knuth Accounting Associate

Diane Knuth is responsible for all daily accounting within Alternative Investment Group. She also works closely with the firm's outside auditors and assists in compliance and human resources. She joined the firm in August 2000.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Diane worked at Knowles Financial Services where she provided accounting services for small businesses. Diane’s other work experience includes positions as an Assistant Treasurer at Bankers Trust Company, responsible for the management of the retirement plans of several large utility companies, and as a Defined Contribution Operations Manager at Professional Pensions.

Diane holds a B.A. degree from Fordham University.

Elizabeth S. Ritchie Executive Personal Assistant

Betsy Ritchie provides executive support to Stewart H. Greenfield, Chairman.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group in August 2017, Betsy was an entrepreneur, establishing and owning several businesses since 1999. The most recent was Organize!, which provided professional organizing, personal assistance, and estate management for homes and businesses. Before that, Betsy worked as an environmental engineer for Dames & Moore, managing large-scale hazardous waste projects for private and government clients. Prior to this, she worked as an aquatic biologist for the National Aquarium in Baltimore and Marine World/Africa USA, where she was responsible for aquatic and land animal care as well as the development of exhibits and a unique volunteer dive program.

Betsy holds a B.A. in Aquatic Biology from University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


Diane Schocken Office Manager & Executive Assistant

Diane Schocken is an Office Manager and Executive Assistant. She joined the firm in June 2018.


Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Diane was Office Manager and Executive Assistant at Berens Capital Management from 2007 to 2018.  Before that, she was an Administrative Assistant at Goldman Sachs in the Asset Management Division and also worked for The Bank of New York.


Diane received an AAS in Finance from the Lubin School of Business at Pace University and is a graduate of the American Institute of Banking. She is a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).
